Shade Beneath Twin Oaks

For setting down your bag in the shade of two oaks standing side by side and taking a midday rest. Crumbs of bread on your knee bring a small bird down from the branches; it tilts its head a short distance away. A wire-strung harp traces a five-note arch and returns to it with small ornaments. The low wooden flute and viola never hurry, shifting expression only slightly over a single G Dorian color. While the dappled light moves across your lap, the next stretch of road can wait.
